BMW has been thinking about marine engines since 1913. After World War I, in 1919, they started making marine engines.
BMW's 2.0-liter and 4-cylinder petrol engine was marketed as the 410 and 411 in the marine industry in the early 1970s. In 1977, BMW AG spun its maritime operations into its company, BMW Marine GmbH. BMW Marine's headquarters and manufacturing facility are in the Belgian city of Verviers.
BMW's engine manufacturing has been further adapted for marine use by BMW Marine. The B 130, powered by a four-cylinder M10 engine displacing 2.0 liters, and the B 190 and B 220, powered by six-cylinder M30 engines displacing 2.8 and 3.3 liters, respectively. The B 635 is the successor of the M30, and its 3.5-liter, electronic-ignition engine was the most powerful at the time.
BMW Marine now offers small sailboat diesel engines ranging in power from 7 to 50 hp, putting it in direct competition with Volvo Penta.
The power plants were built around four air-cooled diesel engines from Hatz, which BMW Marine adapted for use at sea. Marine systems featuring the D-7, D-12, D-35, and D-50 machines were produced after the addition of Hurth Marine transmissions and consoles. The engines' spindle balancing technology was among the first on the market, allowing for quiet operation.
Mercury kept making BMW's five- and six-cylinder diesel engines in production. So Mercruiser rebadged the BMW D 530 and D 636 as the 530 D-TA and 636 D-TA, respectively. In the future, Mercury will become known as D183 and D219 TURBO AC.
Later, to mitigate damage brought on by seawater cooling, BMW Marine revised the two larger versions.
